Chen Guangcheng is a blind activist aged 40 years
from Shandong
province. He is blind since childhood. His family was very poor and had
inadequate educational facilities. By seer hard work he became a lawyer. He
began his career as a peasant activist and raised the issues of local
villagers. The local government initially praised him for advocating the
rights of disabled people. His troubles started when he raised the issues of abortions and sterilizations
which are part of China’s
strict one-child policy. He was in jail for
four years. After that he was kept prisoner in his own home for 19 months.
On
April 22nd he fled to the American embassy in
Beijing,
where Hillary Clinton, America’s secretary of state, was due to arrive for her
country’s annual Strategic and Economic Dialogue with
China. After
six days he willingly left the embassy for hospital. The
US ambassador accompanied him. In
the hospital he was reunited with his family. It is said that he had received
assurances from the Chinese government that he would be treated well and
allowed to study law at university. However, from his hospital bed he
reiterated his demand to leave
China
and go to the
USA
for treatment. He said that he feared for his and his family’s safety in
China. Citing
descriptions from his wife, Yuan Weijing, he said on phone that his family had
been surrounded by Chinese officials who menaced them and filled the family
home. He has two children.1
