Perceptins aout Disability

NO PITY is the title of the book written by Joseph P. Shapiro published in 1993,1994. This book explains how people with disabilities in the United States fought for their rights. Shapiro starts his book with an introduction describing 'non disabled Americans' flawed perspective about people with disability or their inability to recognize the individuality/identity of people with disability as differently able human beings. He gave the example of the memorial service for Timothy Cook a thirty-eight years old lawyer who had won landmark disability rights cases, including one to force public transit systems to equip their buses with wheelchair lifts. . From his childhood he suffered from polio. Consequently he was forced to wear heavy corrective shoes, and had difficulty in walking. That did not deter him from raising the issues of rights of people with disability. At this memorial service longtime friends of Timothy Cook paid him their sincere tributes by saying that "He never seemed disabled to me," or "He was the least disabled person I ever met." Obviously the people with disability present at the memorial service were not very comfortable with these kinds of tributes. Because disability was an integral part of their individuality. They had learnt to live with it and had a sense of self-esteem. Shapiro says that, “…taking pride in his disability was for Cook a celebration of the differences among people and gave him a respectful understanding that all share the same basic desires to be full participant in society.” In India also showing compassion to people with disability is regarded as a sign of positive behaviour and the most accomplished people also do not hesitate in showing sympathy towards people with disability. Whether it hurts the people with disability does not seem to be their concern. Or they do not comprehend that.
